Global Recollection
Daily Global Recollection for August 29, 2011. Words cannot adequately describe the experience of visiting the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. This sign over the entrance of the site at Auschwitz reads, “Arbeit macht frei” in German, ironically meaning “Work sets you free”. Signs like this one were found at several concentration camps. This one, in metal, was made by Polish political prisoners at Auschwitz in 1940.
